Game Recap: vs Fishers Freight March 21, 2026
Welcome back, Blizzard Fans! Week 2 in the IFL saw the Green Bay Blizzard playing host to the Fishers Freight on Saturday, March 21st. Even though this was Green Bay's second home game, it was the first game that fans attended, as last week's game was postponed by a day and eventually closed to fans due to a historic blizzard that impacted the Green Bay area. Both teams secured wins last week and now fight for an early position at the top of the Eastern Conference.
The first quarter got off to a fast start as the Blizzard drove down on their opening drive, as Week 1 IFL Offensive Player of the week, Blizzard QB Liam Thompson punched his way into the endzone on a 4-yard run. On the point-after attempt, the kick was blocked, a special teams theme that would be common throughout the game for the Blizzard. While the Blizzard started the game off hot, the same could not be said for Fishers. Their first drive ended when Freight QB Felix Harper dropped the ball in the middle of the play and was recovered by DL Jonathan Ross. Green Bay needed just one play on its next drive as Thompson connected with WR Isaac Ross on a 23-yard pass. The Freight's next drive was riddled with penalties and resulted in a missed field goal attempt.
The start of the second quarter saw the Blizzard extend their lead as Thompson rumbled for 24 yards and crossed the goal line for his second rushing touchdown of the game. With K Andrew Mevis connecting on this PAT and the previous, the Blizzard were quickly up 20-0, but the second quarter had only just begun. The Fishers next drive was not off to a great start, but was kept alive by defensive penalties. The Freight were able to connect on an intermediate pass from Harper to WR CJ Windham. On the ensuing kickoff, Week 1 IFL Special Teams player of the week, K Calum Sutherland, nailed a deuce attempt, and suddenly it was 20-9, a huge boost for the Freight to keep the game close. The next Blizzard drive ended the same way the previous three drives had, with a touchdown. On this drive, Thompson connected with WR Draysean Hudson for a 35-yard score. On the PAT, the snap was fumbled, and Mevis just fell on the ball to prevent Fishers from recovering. Needing another score to keep pace, the Freight took over and on one play were sacked in their own endzone by DL Allen Henry, resulting in a 2-point safety for Green Bay. Wanting to keep up the pressure, Green Bay had possession after the safety, and Thompson would immediately connect on another score with Hudson, this time for 30 yards. Green Bay now led 35-9. The next Fishers drive was sparked by a 29-yard kickoff return by Ross. In just a few plays, Harper ran his way into the endzone. The score at halftime was 16 for the visitors and 35 for the home team.
In the second half, the contest would become tighter. Fishers took their opening drive, drove down the field, and RB Josiah King, like a freight train, ran his way into the endzone. The Blizzard drive came out flat and resulted in a quick three-and-out. The next Freight drive was a quick 3-play drive capped off by a pass from Harper to WR JT Stokes. Just like that, it was 35-30, still favoring the Blizzard, but the rout was no longer on. On the next Green Bay drive, the Blizzard returned to the run game, something they had not done due to an injury to RB Salvatore Malignaggi in the middle of the second quarter. Blizzard WR Travon Alexander took two handoffs to start the drive, which helped gain some early down confidence for the Blizzard. The drive was capped off by a third Liam Thompson rushing touchdown, which would conclude the scoring in the third quarter. The Blizzard led 42-30, but Fishers had the ball and were driving.
The fourth quarter began, and Harper had run the ball three times on the drive for a total of 24 yards. The Freight scored on a hookup from Harper to WR Isaiah Coulter. Fishers opted for 2 points and failed on the play. On the ensuing kickoff, the Freight recovered the onside kick, but the drive would result in Harper being intercepted by DB Giovanni Waller in a few plays. While the Blizzard drive did not result in a touchdown, Mevis did nail the field goal. Fishers, needing a response, drove down with big receptions by King and Coulter, which led to an eventual 1-yard rushing touchdown by Josiah King. The Blizzard led by just 3 points now. With just over two minutes left to play, the Blizzard chewed through a bit of clock and eventually found their way to the endzone, with Thompson's fourth rushing touchdown. Thompson ran in four touchdowns and threw for three more. The Blizzard lead was back to 9 with a 51-42 lead. The Blizzard defense recorded the game-sealing interception thanks to DB Franky West Jr.
Fishers Freight fall to 1-1 and have a bye in week 3 before they host the Arizona Rattlers in week 4. The Blizzard improved to 2-0 and sit alone at the top of the Eastern Conference. The Blizzard also have a Week 3 bye and will travel to Iowa to take on the Barnstormers in Week 4. The game can be streamed on Overnght, and kickoff is set for 7 PM on April 4th. The Blizzard will return home on April 18th as they will host the Barnstormers.
