Game Recap: Green Bay Blizzard vs Quad City Steamwheelers | May 8, 2026
It's Friday night and Week 9 in the Indoor Football League. The Quad City Steamwheelers come to town to face off with the Green Bay Blizzard on Star Wars Night as the Blizzard strike back against breast cancer. This is the second matchup between the two this season. Quad City comes into the game on a three game, losing streak, losing last week to the Iowa Barnstormers. Meanwhile, the Blizzard enter the game on a three game winning streak; which streak will prevail? Let's dive into the action!
On the opening kickoff Andrew Mevis converts on a deuce attempt. The Steamwheelers would begin by trailing 2-0, and their first drive resulted in a failed fourth down attempt. Looking to capitalize on the momentum, the Blizzard scored on a one play passing touchdown from QB Liam Thompson to WR Trevon Alexander for 21 yards. Hoping for a better second drive, Quad City would opt for another fourth down attempt, but the pass from QB Daquan Neal would be intercepted by Blizzard defensive back Franky West Jr. However, Green Bay was unable to put points on the board as Thompson threw an interception to former Blizzard defensive back Kevin Ransom Jr. Needing a positive offensive drive, the first Quad City play on their third drive was fumbled. Blizzard DB Najei Snyder jarred the ball free and DB Dorian Davis recovered the loose ball. Three drives for the Steamwheelers and no points. The third possession for the Blizzard would result in a 1 yard touchdown pass from Thompson to RB Demilon Brown. At the end of the first quarter the Blizzard led 16-0.
The first drive of the second quarter for the Steamwheelers would finally put points on the board as Neal connected with WR Keyvan Rudd for six. The next Blizzard drive Thompson would throw another pick to DB Nicholas Harris. The Steamwheelers would keep their momentum strong and score another touchdown, this time on a Neal keeper for six more points. The point after attempt would miss, however, Steamwheelers K Jan Bogdan would redeem the lost point by kicking a deuce. Approaching the one minute warning the Blizzard would score another touchdown. This one on a Brown 6-yard carry for six points. On the ensuing kickoff, two Quad City players collided, resulting in a muffed kick return that the Blizzard would pounce on. There was also an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Steamwheelers that shortened the field even more. In just three plays, Thompson would connect with WR Terrell Carey for another touchdown. With just a few seconds left Quad City converted on a field goal. The score at the half favored the Blizzard, 30-18.
After a choreographed lightsaber duel on the field for halftime entertainment, the action was back underway! Green Bay picked up 34 yards on a 3rd and 8 situation on a pass from Thompson to Carey, setting up an Alexander rushing touchdown from 3 yards out. The Steamwheelers had an answer a few minutes later on a Neal scamper of 2 yards. Bogdan would miss another PAT. Bogdan would attempt the deuce, but the ball ricocheted off the crossbar into the field of play. Green Bay was able to recover and get a modest 10 yard return on the near disastrous and unique play. The near turnover did not phase the Green Bay offense as they quickly connected on a 45 yard passing touchdown from Thompson to Carey. The following possession for Quad City nearly had a turnover when Neal seemingly dropped the ball, but he managed to recover and take an 8 yard sack. Despite the negative play, Neal still found the end zone on a pass to RB Jarrod Ware. The Wheelers would opt for two points, but failed. However, once again, Bogdan would just convert on another deuce attempt. At the end of the third quarter. The Blizzard still led 44-30.
The fourth quarter began with the Blizzard on offense. Green Bay went on a 10-play drive that resulted in no points on a missed field goal attempt. On the following Steamwheeler sequence, Neal would be strip sacked, and Green Bay DL Ja'Quon Griffin would recover the loose ball. Green Bay was quick to put up points on a 2-yard rush by Thompson. On the kickoff, Blizzard DB Marcus Hillman you're making outstanding play by forcing a fumble and recovering the ball. Green Bay needed just one play as Thompson connected with WR Draysean Hudson on a 34 yard pass. With about four minutes left on the clock the Wheelers wouldn't go down without a fight. They would score on a pass from Neal to Ware for 6 yards. Neal would rush for a successful two point try. With just a minute on the clock, the Blizzard iced the game on a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Brown. The final score was Green Bay Blizzard 64, Quad City Steamwheelers 40.
Quad City falls to 2-6 and extend their losing streak to 4 games. They look to bounce back at home next Friday when the Tucson Sugar Skulls come to town. The Blizzard winning streak now moves to four games as they travel next Saturday, May 16 to Tulsa to take on the Oilers. Kickoff is at 7:05 PM CDT. Details for the watch party will be released soon.
